I was here on a vacation with some friends, we had a wonderful time at the beach. I have seen many birds that I had never seen before. One day we were hiking on the island and we admired the small cottages that the people here live in. At one place the owner came out of the house and invited us in. He said he did not see that much people in this season, so he was glad to have somebody to talk to. He told us about the history of the island, which was very interesting. We exchanged email addresses and became friends.
Back home, I had to go back to work again. I worked in a fashion shop. Very nice, but the idea of living on that island, grow your own food and be more close to nature was still at the back of my mind. And then I heard that I would lose my job, due to the crisis the branch of our store chain was closed. They paid me six months wages and I could leave.
Well, then the decision was easy. I phoned Arnoud and he generously offered me to stay in his house till I would find my own place on the island. And I found this nice little apartment at the Dorpsstraat. Once this street was busy with shops, but now only old people live on the island. The young people have left for the mainland. Only in summer some come back to open a shop and a café, but this is all closed for the rest of the year.
This is the Dorpsstraat:
At the end of the street you see our church, which is over 700 years old. Arnoud has told me all about it.
My house is in fact a shop, my bedroom has a large window, and at the back is a small place to cook and to live. Looks nice, don't you think?
Arnoud has been such a darling, he helped me paint it all. The kitchen is very old, but I will buy a new one, once I have made some money.
At the back is a small, but sunny garden.
I hope to grow some vegetables there for myself. It's almost winter now, but I will try anyhow.
Oh my goodness, looks so very European! I love it!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. And the pictures really help bring it to life.
