Round 1 - Arnoud Storm

Once I caught my first fish I realized that it looked a bit different from what I buy in the supermarket. I would have to clean it myself. I found a book in the book shelf about cooking fish. Brrrr... I will have to get used to this.

But here I am, having my first meal. And how good did it taste!

The kitchen sink is leaking, so I put a bucket under it. But never mind, later I will learn how to fix this.

I took my bike to go to the village, and buy some food in that nice little supermarket that I had found this summer.

But the village was deserted and all the shops were closed. There was nobody around. Finally I met an old man and asked him where I could buy some groceries. He said: "Take the ferry and drive south for half and hour, there is a shop." He said that all those shops on the island were only open in the summer season, for the tourists.

I have sold my car when I left the city, so that is out of the question. It's too far by bike.
In the garden I found some potatoes, that were left in the ground by the former inhabitants of my house. There were some herbs. In the greenhouse I found some overripe tomatoes.

I was glad that I had taken some seeds with me from the city, so I could plant some new tomatoes and strawberries. I hope they will grow. I don't think I can plant anything in the garden, because there is night frost already. The pond is also frozen, no more fish for now. Fortunately I have some in the freezer.

I was starting to feel a bit lonely. The people on the island were friendly but a bit aloof. I felt like an alien. The meadow of my neighbor was empty now, the cows were inside. There were days that I did not speak to anybody.

Then one day some people were standing on the road, watching my house. They were tourists. They were talking in a foreign language. I went to greet them. They were Danish. They were admiring my house, they said, so I invited them inside and offered them some coffee. (Somehow the photos of this part disappeared, so you have to believe me on my word). I told them something about the history of this island. After all, I am a history teacher, so I know a lot about this. They were very interested.

One woman, her name is Kaylynn Spitzig, was very enthusiastic about my plans to live here and leave the city life behind. We became friends and she came back the next month. She told me she had also quit her job and she wanted to find a house here on this island. She asked if she could stay with me till she found something. So I slept on the sofa and she took my bed. After a week she already found a nice little house. It was a former shop in the Dorpsstraat, very small. She has her bedroom where once was the shop and behind where there was a storage and a kitchen, she has a small living room with a kitchen. There is a very small garden and she is planning to grow some vegetables there too.

She also wants to start a small shop on this island. That would be great. I helped her to paint her new house (she promised that soon she will help me with mine) and then she moved out again, to the Dorpsstraat.
So now we have two aliens in this village. I have a friend and that makes life less lonely.
